Nigeria has unveiled its first National Data Hub for Gender and Climate Information, a groundbreaking initiative designed to generate, harmonize, and visualize gender-disaggregated climate data across key sectors.

The official launch took place on November 12, 2025, in Belem, Brazil, during the Joint Side Event titled “Scaling Inclusive Climate Finance: Delivering the $1.3 Trillion Roadmap for People, Economies and Nature” at COP30.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Barr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, described the new Data Hub as a major milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing effort to mainstream gender perspectives into climate governance.

According to him, the initiative is in line with the Climate Change Act 2021 and the National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change (2020–2025) — both of which call for greater inclusion of women and vulnerable groups in climate-related planning and decision-making.

Majekodunmi explained that the Hub will act as a central repository for gender-disaggregated climate data, allowing policymakers, researchers, and development partners to make evidence-based decisions and measure progress on gender-responsive climate action.

“By harmonizing data across sectors,” he said, “the system will enhance transparency, strengthen climate planning, and support inclusive climate-finance initiatives.”

The NCCC boss added that the launch underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global climate leadership and inclusive sustainable development, noting that gender equality is central to building equity, resilience, and adaptive capacity in communities most affected by climate change.

With the creation of the Data Hub, Nigeria joins a growing number of countries leveraging technology and data systems to close information gaps, promote accountability, and ensure that climate policies work for both people and the planet.
