Abuja — Nigeria has once again underscored its commitment to fostering regional agricultural integration, as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commenced its technical sessions on trade, agriculture, and the environment in Abuja. The sessions, which bring together policymakers, technical experts, and stakeholders from across the region, aim to strengthen cooperation and promote sustainable development in West Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the event, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, emphasized the need for deeper collaboration among member states to enhance regional trade and strengthen shared markets. He stressed that an integrated approach to agriculture would not only improve food security but also boost economic growth and resilience across West Africa.

Minister Kyari highlighted specific areas for cooperation, including the reduction of trade barriers, the promotion of environmentally sustainable farming practices, and the development of infrastructure to support cross-border agricultural trade. He also called for increased information sharing, technological exchange, and coordinated policies to address common challenges such as climate change, pests, and post-harvest losses.

The technical sessions, which run over several days, are expected to result in actionable recommendations for improving agricultural productivity, facilitating trade, and ensuring environmental sustainability. By reaffirming Nigeria’s pledge to regional integration, Minister Kyari positioned the country as a key driver of West Africa’s agricultural development agenda.

Participants at the event expressed optimism that closer cooperation among ECOWAS member states would create more resilient food systems, foster economic growth, and secure livelihoods for millions of farmers across the region.
