The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with key pharmaceutical regulatory agencies, has announced plans to launch a coordinated crackdown on individuals and groups involved in the production, distribution, and sale of fake and substandard drugs across the state.

The move follows rising public concerns over the circulation of counterfeit medicines in local markets, a trend officials say threatens public health and undermines trust in the healthcare system. Authorities warn that the activities of illicit drug promoters have contributed to avoidable illnesses, treatment failures, and in some cases, fatalities.

According to government sources, the operation will involve joint enforcement teams drawn from the Anambra State Ministry of Health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), and security agencies. These teams will conduct targeted surveillance on pharmaceutical outlets, patent medicine stores, open markets, and storage facilities suspected of housing unregistered or unsafe products.

Officials say the upcoming clampdown is part of a broader strategy to sanitize the drug distribution chain, ensure regulatory compliance, and protect residents from harmful pharmaceutical practices. The state government also plans to intensify public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on how to identify genuine medications, verify product authenticity, and report suspicious drug handlers.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, noted that the government will not tolerate actions that endanger lives, stressing that offenders will face severe legal consequences. He added that pharmaceutical integrity is essential to achieving Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for a healthier and safer Anambra.

Stakeholders in the healthcare sector have welcomed the planned operation, describing it as a necessary step to curb the proliferation of fake drugs in the region and safeguard the wellbeing of millions of residents.

The clampdown is expected to commence in the coming days, with authorities pledging sustained monitoring and strict enforcement.
