Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has not received any formal notice of impeachment from the State House of Assembly, three days after a faction of lawmakers announced the commencement of impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

Sources within Government House in Port Harcourt confirmed on Monday evening that, as of that time, no official communication or impeachment letter had been served on the governor, despite public statements by the leadership of the Assembly suggesting otherwise.

The impeachment move was initiated last Thursday by 27 lawmakers, who are widely regarded as loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, further intensifying the ongoing political crisis in the state. The lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of alleged misconduct, though full details of the allegations have yet to be formally communicated to the executive arm of government.

Following the announcement of the impeachment process, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, stated publicly that steps were being taken to ensure the delivery of the impeachment notice to the governor in line with constitutional requirements. However, the absence of any formal notification has raised fresh questions about the procedural integrity of the process.

Political observers note that under Nigeria’s constitution, impeachment proceedings must strictly follow laid-down legal steps, including the formal service of a notice outlining specific allegations against the governor. Failure to comply with these procedures could render the process invalid and open to legal challenge.

The unfolding situation has further exposed the deep political rift within Rivers State, which has persisted since the fallout between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. The power struggle has effectively split the Assembly and paralysed governance, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy.

As of the time of reporting, the Rivers State Government has not issued an official statement on the impeachment move, while tension continues to mount among residents and political stakeholders awaiting clarity on the next steps.

The crisis has also drawn national attention, with concerns growing over its implications for political stability and democratic governance in one of Nigeria’s most strategically important states.
