An Ogun State court has denied bail to controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, and ordered his remand in custody following his arraignment on multiple criminal charges.
Portable was brought before the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, where prosecutors presented a nine-count charge bordering on assault, theft, causing bodily harm, and resisting lawful arrest. The charges stem from allegations that the musician was involved in a violent confrontation and the unlawful taking of a vehicle, incidents which security agencies say escalated when he allegedly resisted police intervention.
During the court session, the prosecution opposed bail, arguing that the seriousness of the offences, combined with the defendant’s alleged conduct during arrest, warranted continued detention. The prosecution further told the court that investigations were ongoing and that granting bail at this stage could interfere with due process.
After listening to submissions from both sides, the presiding judge ruled that Portable would not be granted bail, ordering that he be remanded in custody until January 19, when the matter is expected to come up for further hearing. The court stressed the need for the defendant to remain available to face trial as proceedings advance.
Portable’s arraignment marks the latest in a series of legal troubles that have followed the singer in recent years, often linked to public altercations and disputes with authorities. The case has drawn widespread attention due to his celebrity status and history of controversial encounters, reigniting public debate over accountability and the rule of law as it applies to public figures.
Outside the courtroom, there was a noticeable security presence, while reactions among members of the public were mixed. Some observers described the court’s decision as a necessary step to uphold justice, while others called for due process to be allowed to run its full course without prejudice.
The Ogun State Police Command has reiterated that the case is being handled strictly in line with the law, emphasizing that no individual is above legal accountability regardless of status or popularity. Officials noted that further details would be made available as the trial progresses.
Portable remains in custody pending the next court date, as the judiciary continues to examine the allegations against him.
