MAIDUGURI, Borno State — The Commissioner for Health in Borno State, Professor Muhammed Gana, has publicly commended the Borno State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (BOSCHMA) for its strides in transforming healthcare delivery through the deployment of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) across the state’s public health facilities.

Gana made the commendation during an inspection tour of five digital‑enabled BOSCHMA facilities in Maiduguri on Thursday. Accompanied by members of the agency’s board, the commissioner reviewed operations, ensured quality standards of drug supplies, and assessed renovated infrastructure in the visited centres. His visit also included monitoring staff performance and reassuring improved service delivery.

Highlighting the significance of digital health innovation, Professor Gana said the deployment of EMR systems was designed to enhance service delivery across public hospitals, improve accuracy in diagnosis, streamline laboratory processes and strengthen referral systems. He noted that the state government has invested significant resources to ensure that its healthcare system delivers better care to residents.

“Electronic Medical Records will improve diagnosis in BOSCHMA’s laboratories, support referrals and strengthen overall system capacity for health surveillance,” the commissioner said, adding that the government is working toward expanding the EMR platform to primary healthcare centres throughout the state.

Gana also acknowledged the efforts of BOSCHMA’s leadership and thanked Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for incorporating the formal sector into the contributory healthcare scheme, which he said would save lives and deliver qualitative medical services to the people of Borno State.

Speaking on behalf of the agency, BOSCHMA’s Executive Secretary Saleh Zaka expressed gratitude for the progress achieved so far, noting that the EMR system is expected to improve coordination, efficiency and data collection at the point of care. He added that the platform will also support research by enabling secure access to patient information while ensuring confidentiality and accountability.

Zaka further revealed that more than 60 per cent of enrollees in the contributory health system have accessed services through the improved digital infrastructure, and that enrollment has been made easier via direct online registration. This development, stakeholders say, represents a meaningful step toward modernising health records and expanding access to quality healthcare services across Borno State.

Observers say the adoption of EMR aligns with broader national efforts to digitise health systems and improve patient care outcomes, a priority seen in other federal health initiatives aimed at strengthening data management and interoperability in Nigeria’s health sector.
