A tragic road traffic accident in Lagos resulted in the death of one person and serious injuries to three others after a yam-laden truck lost control and ploughed into a stationary tricycle, authorities and first responders have confirmed.

The collision occurred on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Aiyetoro Junction along the traffic light corridor in the Epe area of Lagos State. The victim and injured occupants were riding in the tricycle — a commercial three-wheeler commonly used for short-distance transport — which was parked at the roadside at the time of the incident.

According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the heavy truck — registered AGL 764 XB — had been travelling from Ijebu-Ode toward the Eleko area and was making a U-turn at the junction when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to ram into the parked tricycle (registration SMK 127 QR).

The impact of the crash was severe. One of the occupants of the tricycle was declared dead at the scene, while three others sustained critical injuries. Lagos State emergency responders were on site promptly, with LASTMA officials alerting other agencies to assist.

Teams from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked in coordination to extricate the injured from the wreckage and control traffic in the area.

The injured were immediately conveyed to the General Hospital in Epe for urgent medical attention and further treatment. Security personnel maintained order during the rescue and recovery operation and facilitated the gradual flow of traffic as the wrecked vehicles were cleared from the scene.

Officials said preliminary findings suggest the driver lost control during the U-turn manoeuvre. However, investigations into whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, or driver fatigue contributed to the loss of control are pending further review by traffic investigators and law enforcement.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and appealed to motorists to exercise caution, especially when navigating busy junctions and during complex driving actions such as U-turns. He also urged regular vehicle maintenance — particularly for heavy loads — to prevent similar accidents.

Traffic incidents involving trucks are not uncommon in Lagos, where urban congestion, mixed traffic, and mechanical issues contribute to recurring collisions. Observers and safety advocates have linked many such crashes to defective braking systems, overloading, and non-adherence to road safety regulations, pressing authorities to enforce stricter compliance within the commercial transport sector.

The fatal collision at Aiyetoro Junction has reignited public debate about the enforcement of road safety laws, safe transport of agricultural produce into urban centres, and the need for ongoing awareness campaigns targeting both commercial and private drivers.

As investigations continue, families of the victims and legal experts await official crash-scene reports that will clarify factors such as vehicle weight compliance, driver licensing, and any possible violations of road safety statutes.
