ABUJA, Nigeria — The Department of State Services has arrested five security officers over allegations that they collected bribes to facilitate unauthorized access for former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai during his return to Nigeria through Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja several weeks ago. The arrests follow a joint investigation into what authorities describe as a serious breach of airport security protocol.
Security sources confirmed that the incident occurred when El-Rufai arrived in the country in mid-February. Upon landing, operatives reportedly moved to question or detain him in connection with ongoing legal and investigative matters. However, the operation was disrupted after certain security personnel allegedly granted him and members of his entourage access to restricted areas within the airport facility, bypassing established clearance procedures.
According to officials familiar with the investigation, the detained officers include personnel drawn from multiple security agencies operating at the airport, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Immigration Service, Aviation Security, and the DSS itself. Authorities allege that the officers received monetary inducements to compromise access controls, thereby interfering with coordinated enforcement action.
The breach triggered an internal review involving the DSS, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, immigration authorities, and other aviation security stakeholders. Investigators reportedly examined surveillance footage, communication logs, and access records before identifying the officers suspected of misconduct. Following interrogation, the officers were detained and are expected to face prosecution under anti-corruption and security laws.
The matter has since been referred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for further action. Officials say the case underscores the vulnerability of critical national infrastructure to internal compromise and the need for stricter enforcement of operational standards within security agencies.
El-Rufai’s return to Nigeria had drawn public attention amid reports of pending investigations involving federal anti-graft agencies. While authorities have not publicly detailed the substance of those investigations, his legal team has previously maintained that any attempt to arrest or question him must comply strictly with due process and constitutional safeguards.
Government officials have not publicly accused El-Rufai of orchestrating the alleged bribery scheme, and no formal charges related to the airport incident have been announced against him at the time of reporting. The focus of the current probe remains on the conduct of the security personnel and the integrity of airport operations.
Security analysts note that airports represent high-risk environments where inter-agency coordination is critical. Any breakdown in protocol, particularly involving financial inducement, can undermine public trust and national security frameworks. The reported compromise at Abuja’s international gateway has therefore prompted renewed calls for reforms in oversight mechanisms and enhanced vetting of officers assigned to sensitive posts.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to accountability, stating that any officer found culpable will face the full weight of the law. Internal disciplinary measures are also expected for individuals who may have enabled the breach through negligence, even if direct bribery cannot be proven.
The case continues to unfold as investigators prepare formal charges. Legal proceedings are anticipated in the coming weeks, with prosecutors expected to rely heavily on digital surveillance evidence and recorded admissions obtained during the interrogation phase.
