The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Nigerian socialite Nzube Henry Ikeji in connection with a sophisticated online fraud that reportedly defrauded a Romanian businesswoman of $2.5 million. Authorities allege that Ikeji impersonated the Crown Prince of Dubai to convince the victim to transfer large sums of money under the guise of investment and humanitarian projects.
Investigators say the scheme combined romance and financial deception, beginning with online communications in which Ikeji, using a false identity, cultivated a personal and seemingly trustworthy relationship with the victim. The fraud involved elaborate narratives, including purported investment opportunities, the use of fake financial documents, and staged meetings in Europe to create the impression of legitimacy.
According to EFCC officials, the operation unraveled after investigative reporting by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project exposed the scheme, prompting Nigerian authorities to launch a formal investigation. The arrest aims to prevent further financial losses and to hold accountable those behind the scam, which reportedly involved accomplices and multiple accounts across different jurisdictions.
Nzube Henry Ikeji has denied wrongdoing, asserting that the allegations are misrepresentations of events. Meanwhile, European authorities are collaborating with Nigerian law enforcement to trace potential international dimensions of the fraud, and other potential victims have reportedly come forward with similar experiences.
The case highlights growing concerns over cross-border cyber-enabled fraud, the use of false identities in digital scams, and the vulnerability of individuals to sophisticated online deception.
