A former high school teacher in Columbus, Ohio, has pleaded guilty to serious sex crime charges involving a prolonged inappropriate relationship with a 15‑year‑old student, shocking her community and drawing sharp attention to issues of trust, safety, and abuse of authority in schools. The case, which began with a disturbing discovery at a private residence, culminated this month with 28‑year‑old Jamelah Daboubi entering guilty pleas in Franklin County Common Pleas Court to charges of gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor — both felonies under Ohio law.

The criminal investigation was triggered in April 2025, when the 15‑year‑old student’s aunt — who has legal guardianship over him — found Daboubi and the teenager in her vehicle during what she described as a sexual act. Authorities were called to the scene after the relative observed the teacher’s car parked outside the boy’s home and, upon approaching, saw the former educator jump off the student’s lap. The incident immediately raised alarm and prompted an official police response.

Once in custody, the teenager spoke to investigators about the nature of his relationship with Daboubi, saying it had extended over several months and involved not only physical contact but also extensive communication. Authorities seized the student’s phone and uncovered hundreds of phone calls and thousands of text messages exchanged between the pair. Many of the messages expressed emotional attachment and indicated a secret relationship that went well beyond appropriate interactions between a teacher and her student.

Daboubi was immediately relieved of her teaching duties and terminated from Horizon Science Academy, a charter school in Columbus where she had taught tenth‑grade English. School officials confirmed her dismissal following her arrest and issued statements saying swift action was taken to protect students and cooperate with law enforcement. At the time, the school emphasised that there was no indication of other inappropriate incidents involving her with any other students on or off campus.

Originally, Daboubi was charged with two counts of sexual battery, a serious felony related to sexual contact with a minor. But as prosecutors reviewed the evidence and built their case, the charges were later amended to gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor — statutes that more accurately reflect the circumstances and legal definitions involved in the conduct between an adult in a position of authority and an underage student.

In entering the guilty pleas, Daboubi acknowledged her role in the unlawful relationship and bypassed a full trial. Under Ohio law, gross sexual imposition refers to situations where an adult engages in sexual contact with someone incapable of consent because of age or power dynamics, while unlawful sexual conduct with a minor applies when an adult engages in sexual activity with someone under 16, regardless of claimed consent. These charges carry significant penalties due to the inherent vulnerability of the minor and the abuse of trust involved.

She now awaits sentencing, which could see her face up to 18 months in prison, the maximum penalty for the offences to which she has pleaded guilty. In addition to possible incarceration, the court has recommended a combination of other consequences meant to hold her accountable and protect the public. These include a period of five years of community control, during which she would be supervised and subject to strict conditions; continuing mandatory counselling to address behavior and reduce the risk of future misconduct; and community service designed to contribute positively to society.

Perhaps most consequential for her professional life, Daboubi is expected to surrender her teaching license, effectively ending her career in education. She will also be required to register as a sex offender under Ohio’s Tier II registry, a designation that carries long‑term legal and social consequences, including restrictions on where she can live and extensive public disclosure of her criminal status.

The case has sparked significant community reaction in Columbus and beyond. Locals have expressed outrage that a person entrusted with students’ education and welfare could breach that trust so profoundly. Many parents and educators have called for heightened attention to student safety and stricter safeguards around teacher conduct, including clearer policies on digital communication and stronger reporting mechanisms when inappropriate behavior is suspected.

Child safety advocates have also underscored the importance of training for school staff on maintaining professional boundaries, recognising signs of grooming, and understanding the legal constraints designed to protect minors. They argue that even consensual‑seeming interactions between adults and students are inherently abusive due to the imbalance of power and vulnerability of children, and must be met with zero tolerance.

Legal analysts following the case noted that the plea process may spare the victim from the trauma of testifying at trial, a common concern in abuse cases involving minors. By resolving the matter through guilty pleas and moving directly toward sentencing, the court can also better ensure confidentiality and support for the student, including opportunities for counselling and any necessary long‑term support services.

As sentencing approaches, many community members are watching closely to see how the justice system balances punishment, rehabilitation, and deterrence. While an 18‑month prison term is substantial within this legal framework, accompanying measures such as community control, counselling, and mandatory relinquishment of her licence are intended to reinforce accountability and prevent further harm.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities educators carry and the devastating impact when those responsibilities are breached. It also highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring safe school environments and protecting students from exploitation by adults in positions of trust.
