Owerri, Imo State — The Imo State Police Command has apprehended a suspected armed robber and recovered firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen items during an intelligence‑led operation in the state’s capital. Authorities said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt violent crime and enhance public safety, particularly ahead of a major holiday period.

According to the command’s spokesman, Henry Okoye, officers from the Orji Division, working with the Anti‑Narcotics Unit, carried out a patrol based on intelligence that led them to a location near Bishop’s Court, close to Pacific Hotel in Owerri. There, the patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Orji Division, intercepted Chigaemezu Aguguom, a native of Umuneke in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area. Aguguom was found with gunshot wounds he sustained during a failed criminal operation.

During interrogation, Aguguom reportedly confessed to being a member of a five‑man armed robbery gang operating in Imo State. He provided information that is assisting investigators in efforts to track down other members of the group who remain at large.

Officers recovered several incriminating items from the suspect, including two locally fabricated firearms loaded with five live cartridges, four mobile phones, a wristwatch, and other valuables believed to have been stolen from victims. These items and the suspect were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri for further investigation and potential prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, assured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding the public and deterring violent crime across the state. He urged the public to continue providing timely information and reporting suspicious activities so law enforcement can act swiftly.

Analysts say the arrest reflects a broader strategy of intelligence‑led policing, leveraging community information to target active criminal networks. Armed robbery and related violent crime remain a recurring threat to safety and economic activity, and cooperation between police and communities is crucial to addressing these challenges effectively.

The Imo State command’s action in Owerri comes amid heightened security measures ahead of major public holidays, when authorities increase patrols and visibility to deter criminal activity and reassure residents. The recovered firearms and other items suggest the suspect was involved in planning or executing violent thefts, which authorities are determined to disrupt.

Local residents reacted with cautious relief to news of the arrest, expressing hope that increased policing efforts will make the state’s capital safer. Community leaders praised the police for acting on intelligence and intercepting an armed suspect before further harm could occur, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation and vigilance in the fight against crime.

Police stated that they will provide updates on whether formal charges will be filed against Aguguom and if additional suspects will be apprehended based on intelligence gathered during interrogation. Authorities remain focused on dismantling criminal syndicates and restoring public confidence in safety across the state.
