A 22-year-old brick moulder, identified as Isreal Ayomide, has been killed in Ogun State following a violent confrontation allegedly triggered by a dispute over N200 at a block industry in the Ota axis of the state, according to accounts from residents, family members, and police authorities.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 1 at Ori-Ade Block Industry along Alaka Road, under the power line in the Rosiji area of Ewupe community. Eyewitnesses said the altercation escalated quickly between the victim and a suspect identified as Aboy, who allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Residents who spoke about the incident described a brief but intense confrontation that began over a small sum of money. One witness said the disagreement lasted only a few minutes before it turned violent, resulting in the suspect allegedly overpowering the victim and stabbing him during a struggle.
The victim was reportedly rushed to a nearby health facility but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival. His death has since triggered anger and anxiety within the community, with residents expressing concern over recurring violent incidents involving the suspect.
Community members alleged that the suspect was known for frequent altercations in the area and had a history of violent behaviour. Some residents claimed he had previously been involved in similar attacks, though these allegations have not been independently verified by authorities.
The father of the deceased recounted that his son was attacked at the family’s block industry site located in the Obasanjo Farm axis. He explained that the suspect had arrived earlier than the victim on the day of the incident and was already at the premises when Ayomide arrived for work.
According to the father, the confrontation began after the suspect demanded N200 from the victim, which was refused. The disagreement reportedly escalated into an argument, during which the victim mentioned plans by his father to remove the suspect from the premises due to prior issues.
The situation allegedly turned violent when a physical struggle ensued, during which the victim fell, and the suspect allegedly used a bottle to inflict fatal injuries before fleeing the scene. The victim was later taken to a nearby health centre, where he was pronounced dead.
The bereaved father also alleged that the suspect had been a frequent presence in the area due to a nearby recreational football field and other informal activities that attracted youths to the location. He further stated that the family operated a small commercial hub around the block industry, including services such as a car wash and games facilities that drew young people to the environment.
Following the incident, there were claims from some residents that law enforcement initially detained several individuals, including witnesses and local leaders who reported the case. Some community members accused the police of prioritising questioning of residents rather than immediately pursuing the fleeing suspect.
However, these allegations were denied by police authorities. A senior police officer in the area confirmed that the suspect’s mother was a retired police officer but rejected claims that this had any influence on the handling of the case. He stated that the suspect is an adult and fully responsible for his actions, adding that the mother had cooperated with investigators and supported efforts to arrest her son.
The police further explained that efforts to track the suspect have been ongoing but have been hindered by the fact that he left his mobile phone behind during his escape. Authorities confirmed that multiple attempts are being made to locate him and bring him into custody.
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation is underway. The command’s spokesperson said officers are actively working to apprehend the suspect and assured that justice would be served once he is arrested.
Police officials dismissed allegations of bias or interference in the investigation, insisting that the case is being handled professionally and without external influence. They also stated that details of the investigation cannot be fully disclosed at this stage due to its ongoing nature.
The killing has sparked concern among residents of the Ewupe community, with many calling for increased security presence and stronger intervention to prevent further violent incidents. Community members have also urged authorities to ensure the swift arrest of the suspect and prosecution of anyone found responsible.
As of the time of reporting, the suspect remains at large, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation that claimed the life of the young brick moulder.
