The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced that the maiden international flight from Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana, will take off on Saturday, May 2, 2026, marking a historic milestone for the state's aviation sector and delivering a significant political boost to the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio.

The announcement was made in a press release issued on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, by the state Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah. The flight, to be operated by the state-owned Ibom Air, is scheduled to depart Uyo for Accra on Saturday, May 2, with a return flight planned for Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The development follows presidential approval granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international status, as well as sustained investments by Governor Umo Eno's administration to put in place all required technical and infrastructural facilities.

The governor expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for granting the approval and to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), for his role in actualising the vision. The state government also acknowledged the contributions of former governors of the state, including Senator Godswill Akpabio, for their pioneering roles in the development of the aviation sector.

The maiden flight represents a strategic achievement for Akwa Ibom State, enhancing international connectivity and positioning the state as a destination for tourism and investment. For Senator Akpabio, the approval and the imminent take‑off of international operations from the airport he championed during his tenure as governor (2007–2015) serves as a major political boost, reinforcing his influence in the South‑South region as the 2027 general elections approach. While this maiden flight signals the commencement of international operations, the official opening of the new terminal building and full commercial flight schedules will be announced in due course.

The state government reiterated its commitment to the sustained development of the aviation ecosystem for the economic advancement of Akwa Ibom State.
