Kogi Police Investigate Death of University Student Allegedly Assaulted by Vigilante Group in Olamaboro

The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 400-level student of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, identified as Andrew Amehson Aziko, following an incident involving a vigilante group attached to Nana College of Health in Ibana Okpo, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

According to an official statement by the Commissioner of Police, CP Nasir Bello Kankarofi, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 28, 2026. The police said a report was received at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters at about 10:30 a.m., prompting officers to visit the scene for investigation.

The command stated that preliminary findings indicated the victim was intercepted around 3:00 a.m. by security personnel while allegedly attempting to enter the premises of the institution. The police report confirmed that during the encounter, the individual was assaulted by members of the security team attached to the school.

Police further stated that the victim was later found unresponsive and was taken to a medical facility, where he was confirmed dead. His body has since been deposited in a mortuary for identification and further examination.

The Commissioner of Police confirmed that the scene was processed by investigators, who collected evidence relevant to the case. He added that homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have been deployed to conduct a full investigation.

The police also stated that individuals identified as being involved in the incident are currently at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.

According to the command, initial findings suggest that private security personnel and vigilante operatives were involved in the incident. The police reiterated that such groups are not authorised to administer punishment or use excessive force under any circumstances.

A video circulating on social media reportedly shows the victim being restrained and assaulted by individuals identified as security operatives before his death.
