Stone Reporters have gathered that residents of Afikpo, Ebonyi State, were left in shock after a young boy reportedly stole a brand new motorcycle and sold it for only N40,000.
The incident, which has sparked outrage and disbelief in the community, highlights what many fear is a growing trend of juvenile involvement in property crime.
According to accounts gathered from locals, the boy allegedly made away with the motorcycle, whose actual market value is estimated to be several hundred thousand naira, and quickly disposed of it for a fraction of its worth. The buyer, who may have been unaware of the motorcycle's stolen status or chose to ignore it, is also being sought by residents.
Community leaders have expressed concern over the boy's actions, noting that such a low sale price suggests desperation or a lack of understanding of the motorcycle's true value. Some residents have called on parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the activities of young people in their care.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has not yet released an official statement on the matter.
However, sources indicate that an investigation is likely to be launched to recover the stolen motorcycle and apprehend the boy, who is believed to be a minor. If arrested, he may be processed under the state's juvenile justice system rather than charged as an adult.
As of press time, the motorcycle had not been recovered, and the identity of the buyer remains unknown. Residents of Afikpo are hoping the police will act swiftly to recover the stolen property and ensure that the young offender receives appropriate counselling and correction.
