The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 25‑year‑old man, Idrisu Musa, in connection with the brutal killing of his elder brother and the brother’s wife in Asarara Village, Jega Local Government Area. The police disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, May 9, 2026, after the suspect was taken into custody. The victims were identified as 45‑year‑old Muhammad Haruna and his 35‑year‑old wife, Habiba Abubakar, also known as Habiba Muhammad, a mother of six.
According to police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman, the couple were attacked with a cutlass while asleep in their home at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Saturday. Both sustained severe injuries and died at the scene. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but investigators have recovered what they described as “substantial and implicating evidence” linking the suspect to the crime. The police also noted that the suspect had allegedly threatened the couple with a cutlass on several previous occasions before the fatal assault.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar M. Hadejia, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. The command has assured the public that justice will be pursued diligently.
Family members described the late Muhammad Haruna as a peaceful man who was not known for quarrels or disputes within the community, expressing shock over the development.
The deceased couple are survived by six children, four boys and two girls. The incident had earlier sparked concern among residents of Jega Local Government Area after reports emerged that unidentified persons had attacked and killed the couple inside their residence. The arrest is expected to bring some relief to members of the community, who had been demanding swift action from security agencies. The police said further updates would be made available as investigations continue.
