It was supposed to be her 24th birthday. Instead, Ilebaye Precious Odiniya, the winner of the 2023 Big Brother Naija All‑Stars edition, found herself trapped inside her father’s home in Abuja, bleeding, terrified, and broadcasting her pain to millions of followers on Instagram Live in the early hours of Saturday, May 9, 2026. Within minutes of her desperate plea, operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command were on their way, and by 2:30 a.m., they had broken through a locked gate, fought off dogs, and rescued the reality television star from the home of her father, Honourable Emmanuel Odiniya. The police also rescued her brothers and rushed all of them to the NNPC Hospital in Abuja. Videos circulating online showed Ilebaye with a visibly swollen face, crying uncontrollably and begging Nigerians for help. “Please come and help me,” she screamed in the viral clip whose contents are too graphic to describe. “I am tired of the assault. I am being locked up.”

The FCT Police Command confirmed the arrest of Hon. Emmanuel Odiniya in a detailed statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh. According to the statement, the police received a distress call at approximately 12:00 a.m. on May 9 from Royal Anchor Estate, Wuye, Abuja, reporting an ongoing physical assault on Ms Ilebaye Odiniya Emmanuel by her father. A patrol team from the Wuye Division was immediately deployed, supported by operatives from the Department of Operations, with the police spokesperson also present at the scene to monitor the operation. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the gate to the compound had been locked. After several attempts, they gained access at about 2:30 a.m. and found the victim with visible bruises. She was rescued alongside her brothers and rushed to the NNPC Hospital for medical attention. According to police sources, officers encountered additional resistance, including the release of large dogs intended to prevent them from entering. Reports indicate that one of the brothers was also roughed up during the altercation.

The ugly saga has deep roots in a bitter custody and divorce battle. Ilebaye’s mother, Mrs Lami Odiniya, later confirmed that a heated argument broke out between father and daughter when the estranged husband accused the reality star of being negatively influenced by her mother. The argument quickly turned physical. The timing could not have been crueller. The confrontation occurred on Ilebaye’s birthday and only hours after she had posted an emotional tribute to her mother on social media. According to Mrs Lami, the argument turned physical when Mr Odiniya accused his daughter of being brainwashed by her mother. Mrs Lami said she was in the house when the beating began, and her son alerted her that Ilebaye’s face was swollen. By the time she got there, police had already arrived.

The rescue operation did not end the nightmare. Police later confirmed that after Emmanuel Odiniya was taken into custody, authorities were forced to enforce an existing court custody order that gave Mr Odiniya the right to keep the couple’s two sons, aged 11 and 14. Mrs Lami said the boys were temporarily handed to her following the arrest but were returned to their father by 9:00 a.m. that same day, in keeping with the court’s ruling. The father was promptly released from police custody the same day after fulfilling bail conditions, but the FCT Police Command stressed that a “thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.” The police also clarified that the rescued siblings were in protective custody temporarily and that the father remained in police custody to face fresh charges.

The public reaction has been swift and unforgiving. Fans and fellow celebrities took to social media to condemn the assault and demand justice. Fellow BBNaija star Tacha reacted on her Instagram story, calling on residents of Abuja to help locate and rescue Ilebaye. “I really just want to know who is in Abuja right now that can take the police to Ilebaye’s house,” Tacha wrote. “Ilebaye’s face has been ruined. I don’t even know who did it, but from the video I have seen, they are being really brutal.” Other public figures, including activist and singer Charly Boy, called the assault a “wake-up call” for Nigerian families to break the silence around violence against adult children. The hashtag #JusticeForIlebaye trended across social media platforms for hours.

For Ilebaye, the ordeal is a shocking fall from the celebratory heights she experienced after winning the N120 million grand prize in the 2023 All‑Stars season. Since then, she has become one of Nigeria’s most recognisable entertainment personalities, with millions of followers on social media. Yet none of that fame shielded her from the violence that erupted inside her father’s compound on the night of her birthday. Medical sources at NNPC Hospital said she was treated for facial trauma and stabilised with intravenous drips. Her mother confirmed that Ilebaye has since been discharged and is now recovering away from the public eye.

The case has reopened a searing debate about parental rights, child custody, and domestic violence in Nigeria. Activists have pointed to the inherent contradiction in a legal system that releases an alleged abuser on bail within hours while the victim carries bruises she may never fully heal from. Police have assured the public that the investigation is active and will include a detailed forensic review of the video evidence.

It is unclear whether Ilebaye intends to press charges against her father. A family source said she was traumatised and still processing the events. But the video, which remains online despite efforts to remove it, may itself become a key piece of evidence. The FCT Police Command has not announced a date for further court proceedings. What is certain, however, is that an otherwise happy birthday will forever be remembered as the night Nigerians watched in horror as one of their most beloved stars was saved from her own home.
