A quiet Sunday night journey along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway became a scene of utter tragedy after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge in Ogun State, resulting in the deaths of all 11 people on board. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Monday, May 11, 2026, stating that the crash involved a gold Toyota with registration number GGE722KJ.

According to a statement by the command’s Public Education Officer, Mr Odunsi Afolabi, the accident occurred on Sunday night. The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, explained that the vehicle had been travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos route when the driver lost control.

The Toyota somersaulted multiple times before falling off the Eruku Bridge. Upon impact, the doors became jammed, trapping all the occupants inside the wreckage. Emergency responders from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were deployed to the scene immediately after the alarm was raised.

The Sector Commander stated that due to the vehicle being completely mangled and the doors locked, rescue officials, with the assistance of local community members, had to physically dismantle parts of the car to recover the bodies.

All 11 passengers, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash. Their remains were subsequently transported to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC have attributed the probable cause of the fatal crash to a combination of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and overloading. Following the tragedy, Corps Commander Ogunjobi issued a strong appeal to motorists, urging them to exercise extreme caution, particularly during night journeys.

He advised travellers on the Abeokuta-Lagos route to avoid reckless driving and ensure their vehicles are in proper condition. The Sector Commander also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
