A 12‑year‑old Nigerian boy, Damilola Khalid Afolabi, has died after drowning in Mahogany Lake in Calgary, Canada, shortly after he jumped into the water on Sunday, May 3, 2026. According to reports, the child had been playing basketball before he suddenly entered the lake from a dock and failed to resurface. Emergency services were called around 7:20 p.m. after witnesses reported that a child had gone into the water and disappeared.

Rescue teams from the Calgary Fire Department responded to the scene but faced difficult conditions, including poor visibility and cold water, which slowed the search operation.

After nearly 45 minutes, responders located the boy more than six metres underwater and brought him out for emergency care. Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan explained the recovery effort, saying, “Our rescuers were able to pull the child out of the water from a depth of about 6 meters, into a waiting ambulance.” He added that the boy was transported in critical, life‑threatening condition.

The boy’s father, Jubreel Babatunde Afolabi, was deeply emotional during the funeral held on May 6. The Nigerian community in Calgary and beyond has expressed grief over the loss, with many extending condolences to the family.

The circumstances of the drowning remain under review by local authorities, who have reminded residents of the dangers of open water, especially in cold conditions where even strong swimmers can quickly become overwhelmed.
