Suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched a devastating pre‑dawn attack on two security checkpoints in Tuga community, Bagudu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing two Nigeria Customs Service officers and leaving two others with gunshot wounds. The assault occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, when the attackers arrived in a truck disguised as a vehicle transporting animals, a tactic apparently designed to lower the vigilance of the guards. According to sources familiar with the incident, the gunmen stormed two checkpoints situated close to each other and caught the officers off guard. A senior officer described as a “three‑star” official was burnt alive after the assailants set fire to the structure where he was resting, while another officer identified as a “one‑star” was shot dead on the spot. Two other Customs officers sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Tuga community and the wider Bagudu LGA, which has witnessed a surge of violence linked to the Lakurawa group in recent months. A resident of Gendene community, Bello Shata, told Vanguard that the terrorists also set the officers’ operational vehicle on fire and shot two villagers, a male and a female, who are also receiving treatment at an undisclosed health facility. The Kebbi State Police Command has neither confirmed nor denied the incident. The Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Mubarak, told newsmen that the command would issue a press statement once full details are obtained. The spokesman of the Nigerian Police, Kebbi State Command, SP Bashir Usman, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

The incident follows a pattern of escalating insecurity along the border areas of Kebbi State. In November 2025, a Customs officer, Sadiq T. Mohammed, was killed by Lakurawa terrorists during an attack on the Maje Customs Post in Bagudo LGA. In September 2025, a Customs officer attached to the Fingila checkpoint in Dandi LGA was shot dead by suspected Lakurawa gunmen. In March 2026, gunmen attacked a police border checkpoint along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje road, killing two officers. Wednesday’s attack, however, stands out for its brutality: a senior officer was burned alive while resting, and the attackers used a truck disguised as a vehicle carrying animals to lower the guards’ guard.

The Nigeria Customs Service has not issued an official statement on the incident, and the Kebbi State Area Command has yet to release the identities of the slain officers. Residents of Tuga community remain on edge, fearing further attacks. The Nigerian military has intensified patrols in the area, but the murder of two Customs officers, one burned alive and one shot, stands as a grim reminder that the battle for control of Nigeria’s borderlands is far from won.
