Lagos State House of Assembly member, Hon. Desmond Elliot, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Surulere I Constituency seat, citing alleged irregularities during the voting process.
In a video circulating on social media, Elliot claimed that some of his supporters who were present at the primary election venue were not allowed to participate in the voting exercise. He said the development influenced his decision to step down from the contest.
The APC primary elections in Lagos State were held across various constituencies in May 2026 as part of the party’s internal process to select candidates for the upcoming election cycle. The Surulere I constituency, which Elliot currently represents, was among the closely watched races due to its political significance within Lagos politics.
Elliot, a long-serving member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, stated in the video that his supporters had arrived at the venue but were allegedly prevented from voting. He did not provide further details on those responsible for the process or present documentary evidence within the recording.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State chapter of the APC has not issued an official response addressing the specific claims raised in the video or the circumstances surrounding his withdrawal from the primary election.
Party primaries in Nigeria are typically conducted using a delegate system, where accredited party members are allowed to vote in selecting candidates. Disputes over accreditation and voting access have been a recurring issue in internal party elections across various political parties and states.
Desmond Elliot, who has combined a political career with a background in Nigeria’s film industry, has served multiple terms representing Surulere I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The APC is expected to continue addressing post-primary developments through its internal mechanisms as it finalises its candidate selection process ahead of the next general election cycle.
At the moment, Elliot’s withdrawal remains part of the ongoing primary election developments within the Lagos APC structure, with further clarification yet to be issued by the party or the lawmaker.
