Umulogho, Imo State – A female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State was found beheaded in her off‑campus apartment on Thursday evening, May 21, 2026, throwing residents and fellow students into panic. The victim, identified by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Command, DSP Henry Okoye, as Wendy Achumba, hails from Ngwa in Abia State. Reports from the school indicate that she had completed her Midwifery programme but was still on post‑basic training.
According to an eyewitness account, neighbours became concerned when Achumba failed to respond to repeated calls and did not come out of her room for several hours. A resident told the Punch that the door to her apartment was firmly locked from the inside, but after forcing it open, the lifeless body of the student was found with her head severed. Her mobile phone was also missing from the room. “We don’t know who did this or why she was killed. When we forced the door open, it was still locked from the inside. Someone checked and dismissed fears of rape, but her phone was missing,” the source said. Another resident, identified only as Ike, said the deceased had been seen alive just a day earlier, adding that the incident had left the entire community in a state of shock.
The killing has thrown the Umulogho community into fear, and students of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, were said to be in a state of panic over the development. Tension further heightened when angry youths confronted police officers who arrived at the scene; the victim’s body had yet to be evacuated to the morgue as of Thursday evening, according to early reports.
Confirming the incident on Friday, May 22, 2026, DSP Okoye said the Police Command had deployed personnel to the area for an on‑the‑spot assessment and had commenced a full investigation. “Following the report, the DPO and operatives promptly visited the scene for an on‑the‑spot assessment, after which the body was recovered and deposited at the morgue, while investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and arrest those responsible,” the police statement read.
The spokesman further disclosed that one suspect has been arrested for preliminary questioning to assist with ongoing investigations. He appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control and that every effort is being made to ensure those behind the act are brought to justice.
The tragic incident has raised questions about the safety of off‑campus student accommodation in Obowo LGA. As of the time of this report, the identity of the arrested suspect has not been released, and investigations continue.
