The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 26‑year‑old man, Bashar Aliyu, for the alleged murder of his own grandfather, Ibrahim Maisaje, 70, inside the elderly man’s home in Sabon Kariya Village, Ganjuwa Local Government Area.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday, 17 May 2026, at approximately 4:30 pm. According to a police statement issued on Friday, 22 May, the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ganjuwa received a report from a 58‑year‑old resident of the village at about 5 pm. The witness stated that earlier that day, Bashar Aliyu had allegedly used a knife to stab his grandfather inside the victim’s room.
Police operatives immediately visited the scene and rushed the severely bleeding patriarch to the General Hospital in Kafin Madaki, where a medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
While the suspect was quickly apprehended, investigators have not yet recovered the knife used in the attack. “No exhibit was recovered at the scene,” the police spokesman confirmed. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for a more thorough investigation into the motive.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani‑Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the act and assured the public that justice would be pursued fully and without compromise. He also appealed to community members to adopt peaceful conflict resolution and to report suspicious activities to the police early enough to prevent such domestic tragedies.
In a separate statement, the Nigeria Police Force’s New Media Officer, Giwa Aliyu, described the killing as an agonising act of familial betrayal. “This loss is deeply felt and difficult to put into words. After seventy years of overcoming challenges, his life was ended in his own home by someone he helped raise,” the statement read.
The elderly man’s death has plunged Sabon Kariya Village into mourning. No formal charge has yet been filed, as investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led a 26‑year‑old to turn a knife on a grandfather who should have been enjoying a peaceful old age.
