Troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace, have arrested the father of a herder who attacked a farmer in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State after the farmer resisted attempts to graze cattle on his farmland. The incident occurred on Thursday, 28 May 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Hai Kurra Fall, following a dispute over grazing access.
According to security sources, the farmer, identified as Mr Isah Ahmad, was allegedly attacked by a herder after he refused to allow the suspect to graze cattle on his farm. The victim sustained injuries during the attack, while the suspected attacker fled the scene. Troops later apprehended the father of the fleeing suspect, identified as Mr Umar Abdullahi, during follow‑up operations in the area. A search conducted in the village led to the recovery of three Boxer motorcycles. The injured farmer was evacuated to a medical facility in Makoli Village for treatment, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing herder.
The arrest underscores the continued deployment of military force to mediate farmer‑herder conflicts in Plateau State, where disputes over grazing routes and farmland have frequently escalated into violence, leading to deaths, displacement and destruction of property. Operation Enduring Peace, a joint military task force, has intensified patrols and intervention operations across Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Riyom and Bassa local government areas in an effort to prevent reprisal attacks and restore stability.
Local community leaders have welcomed the swift military response but have called for sustained dialogue and structural solutions, such as the establishment of grazing reserves and ranching schemes, to address the root causes of the recurring conflicts. As of Friday, 29 May 2026, no official statement had been issued by the Plateau State Police Command, and the fleeing herder remained at large.
