The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a violent attempt to steal a two-week-old baby from her mother’s residence in the Olokoro community of Umuahia South Local Government Area, an attack that left the nursing mother stabbed with a kitchen knife and the infant injured after being dropped during the struggle. The police identified the suspects as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both residents of Olokoro. They were arrested on charges of conspiracy, attempted child theft, and possession of suspected hard drugs, following a report filed by the victim, Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, a 32-year-old nursing mother.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, May 30, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026. The police explained that the two suspects went to the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, who also resides in Olokoro. Nzubechi Chinagorom allegedly attempted to forcibly take away her two-week-old baby girl, leading to a violent struggle with the mother. In the process, he assaulted her and stabbed her with a kitchen knife, causing the infant to fall and hit her head on the ground. The statement added that Chinonso Chibundu remained outside the house, acting as a lookout during the attack.
Following the victim’s distress call, both suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly found taking substances suspected to be hard drugs. The mother and the baby were immediately rushed to a hospital, where they received treatment and have since recovered, according to the police. The statement disclosed that the suspects were apprehended, exhibits were recovered, and an investigation has been concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The police confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court on June 2, 2026.
