ABAKALIKI, Ebonyi State — June 5, 2026 — A man identified as Samuel Chidi, a law graduate of Ebonyi State University, is currently in police custody following allegations of criminal negligence after his wife reportedly died during childbirth under circumstances now under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force.
The incident reportedly occurred at a residential compound located around Diamond Point Junction, Chinedu Ogah Avenue, Abakaliki, on the night of June 4, 2026, at about 11pm. The deceased, identified as Mrs. Nkechi Chidi, was said to have gone into labour inside their home.
According to accounts shared by a social media user and circulated online, the situation escalated after the woman experienced complications during labour. The claims allege that the husband insisted on a home delivery despite the fact that the woman had previously undergone two caesarean sections, a condition generally considered high-risk and requiring hospital supervision.
It was further alleged that medical assistance was not immediately sought, even though a nurse reportedly lived within the same compound and could have been contacted. Instead, the situation reportedly continued within the residence without formal hospital intervention until the following morning.
A neighbour, identified in reports as a nurse, is said to have discovered the incident the next day after attempting to check on the woman. The neighbour allegedly raised alarm and facilitated the involvement of medical personnel, after which the newborn was moved for emergency care while the mother was confirmed dead.
The body of the deceased was later taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) mortuary for preservation.
Tensions reportedly escalated within the compound after the deceased woman’s family was informed. Sources claim that the family expressed anger over the circumstances surrounding her death and initially moved to confront the situation at the residence before security intervention.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from Kpirikpiri Division, who were reportedly on patrol in the area, intervened to restore order and took control of the scene. The body was subsequently moved back to the mortuary, while Samuel Chidi was taken into police custody for questioning.
Police authorities have not yet issued a formal detailed statement on the full circumstances of the case, but sources within the security agency confirmed that an investigation has commenced to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the woman’s death.
The allegations circulating online include claims of delayed medical intervention and attempts to manage the delivery within the home environment without adequate professional medical support. These claims remain unverified and are currently subject to police investigation.
Residents of the area have described the incident as deeply distressing, particularly given the proximity of medical personnel within the compound and the availability of nearby healthcare facilities in Abakaliki.
The case has also triggered widespread reactions on social media, with users expressing shock and calling for a thorough investigation. Some commentators have urged authorities to ensure accountability if negligence is established, while others have cautioned against premature conclusions pending official findings.
As of June 5, 2026, Samuel Chidi remains in police custody at the Kpirikpiri Police Station while investigators gather statements from witnesses, medical personnel, and family members involved in the case.
Authorities have indicated that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
