A brutal attack unfolded in Kogi State on Saturday night when armed bandits stormed the Aluta Bar Relaxation centre in the Ikoyi community of Ijumu Local Government Area. The assailants abducted the bar manager and a sales girl, and killed one person during the assault, which occurred around 7:00 p.m. on June 6, 2026.
The Kogi State Government, however, has presented a slightly different account of the evening's events. In an official press release, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, confirmed that a "gathering in the community" was targeted. He stated that a joint security team, comprising the Nigerian Military, Police, Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters, responded to distress calls within minutes. A fierce gun battle ensued, forcing the attackers to retreat into nearby forests. Authorities confirmed that one person was killed in the crossfire, and another individual sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
The state government’s statement acknowledged a violation of security protocols, noting that a group of Tiv residents had organized a public social gathering in defiance of a state ban on such events after 4:00 p.m. According to the press release, it was this unauthorized assembly that was stormed by the bandits. This detail suggests that the "Aluta Bar Relaxation" might have been the venue for this banned gathering.
Intelligence reports reviewed by security agencies indicate that several of the bandits sustained gunshot wounds during the firefight before fleeing into the dense forests that border the community. A manhunt has been launched to track down the criminals.
The incident has sparked outrage and fear among residents of the usually peaceful Ijumu LGA. The abduction of the bar staff is particularly concerning, as it signals a shift in tactics by criminal elements from general terrorizing to targeted abductions of specific individuals. Local sources have identified the abducted manager and sales girl, but their names are being withheld pending the notification of their families. Security forces have set up roadblocks and are combing the area in a determined effort to rescue the victims.
The government has called on residents to support the operation by reporting anyone found with suspicious gunshot wounds, a standard appeal after such engagements. The response time of security operatives was praised for preventing what could have been a major security disaster, but questions remain about the intelligence failure that allowed the bandits to breach the area undetected. As the manhunt continues, the bar manager and his colleague remain in captivity, their fate unknown.
