A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer has been shot dead and his daughter abducted by armed bandits who attacked Odo‑Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, on the evening of Monday, June 8, 2026, deepening fears of escalating insecurity in the rural communities of Kogi’s western district.

According to multiple sources familiar with the incident, the attackers stormed the community at about 7:00 pm, shooting sporadically to create panic before targeting specific residents. The victim, identified as Mr. Ayo, a serving officer of the NSCDC, was struck in the head by a bullet during the assault. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility but was declared dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary as a “Brought‑In‑Dead” case.

The gunmen, who witnesses said arrived in large numbers and operated unchallenged for several minutes, also abducted Mr. Ayo’s eldest daughter before fleeing into nearby bushes. Her age and identity have not yet been disclosed by family sources, who are still in shock and mourning.

As of the time of filing this report, no security agency had issued an official statement on the incident. Police operatives from the Yagba West Division are said to have visited the scene, but no arrests have been reported, and no rescue operation has been confirmed. The abducted girl remains in captivity, and the kidnappers have not made any contact or demand.

The attack on Odo‑Ere marks a troubling expansion of banditry into Kogi State’s western corridor, an area previously considered less vulnerable to the type of mass abduction and lethal raids that have plagued the North‑West and North‑Central zones. Yagba West Local Government Area shares borders with Ekiti and Kwara states, and its remote villages, dense vegetation, and limited security presence have made it a potential hideout for criminal elements.

Residents have expressed outrage and fear following the attack, describing it as the most brazen security breach in the community in recent memory. Some called on the Kogi State Government and the military to urgently deploy more personnel to the area and to conduct clearance operations in the forests surrounding Odo‑Ere, where the bandits are believed to have retreated.

The killing of an NSCDC officer while on duty highlights the growing danger facing security personnel in rural communities, where bandits have increasingly targeted not only civilians but also uniformed officers. The abduction of the officer’s daughter adds a layer of personal tragedy that has left colleagues and neighbours reeling.

As night fell on Odo‑Ere, the community remained tense, with many families staying indoors behind locked doors. The search for the abducted girl is said to be ongoing, though no official rescue team has been publicly identified. The Kogi State Police Command has yet to issue a statement, and calls to the Public Relations Officer went unanswered at the time of this report.

For the family of Mr. Ayo, the evening of June 8 will forever mark the moment when gunfire shattered their home, and a father’s sacrifice could not protect his child from being dragged into the bush. As the community waits for news, one question hangs in the air: how much longer will rural Nigerians have to bury their dead while their children are taken?
