The Borno State Police Command has rescued a six-year-old boy abducted from his neighbourhood in Maiduguri and arrested a suspect who allegedly demanded a ransom of ₦200,000 for the child’s release, police authorities confirmed on Monday, June 8, 2026.
The victim, identified as Alkali Musa of the Mafoni area of Maiduguri, was reported missing after he left his home to play on Saturday, June 6, 2026, and failed to return, according to a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Nahum Daso. Preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after the child’s disappearance, the suspect contacted the boy’s parents and demanded a ransom payment for his release.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, at approximately 2:00 pm, the command received a formal report of the missing child from the parents and immediately activated its emergency response machinery. The Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division mobilised a team of detectives and launched an intelligence-led operation to track down the suspect and locate the child.
The operation led to the arrest of a suspect, identified as Ali Alhaji Ali, and the successful rescue of the victim unharmed. Police said the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the officers involved in the operation for their swift response and professionalism and reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. The command further urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children, while encouraging members of the public to promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
