The Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State was thrown into profound sorrow on Monday, June 8, 2026, following the tragic deaths of two of its indigenes in separate fatal road accidents that occurred within hours of each other. The victims were identified as Mr. Thompson Kalu and Mr. Uma Orji, popularly known as “Ome Ego”.
According to accounts from the community, the first accident occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 7, 2026. Mr. Thompson Kalu was riding his motorcycle when a truck, reportedly operating without headlamps, crashed into him. He sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot before he could be rushed to a hospital. In a separate incident the following morning, Mr. Uma Orji lost his life in a lone accident. While he was riding in a truck, the vehicle suddenly crashed and fell on him, leading to his death. The exact circumstances of the crash, including the cause, have not yet been officially determined.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Police Force had not released official statements about the accidents at the time of this report. However, the community has responded with deep grief. The paramount ruler of Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, Ezie Ukoha Kalu, alongside the Ezie‑in‑Council and the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), issued a statement describing the deaths as a “profound shock” and lamenting the loss of two “illustrious sons”. The Public Relations Officer of the EODU, Ifeanyi Okali, noted that the community was in “deep mourning,” adding that the deceased were “hardworking and responsible individuals who were striving daily to provide for their families and contribute meaningfully to the society”.
The back‑to‑back tragedies have created a somber atmosphere in Ebem Ohafia, with residents mourning the loss of two men who were well‑respected in the community. The state authorities have yet to comment on the incidents.
