The Nigerian Army has lost a Lieutenant and six soldiers in a deadly ambush laid by suspected terrorists in Rigachikun, a garrison community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The attack occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, just as troops were returning from a clearance operation along the Kaduna-Zaria corridor, a route notorious for criminal hideouts and kidnapping rings. Despite the deployment of tactical teams and the launch of an immediate reinforcement mission, security sources confirmed that a fierce gun battle claimed the lives of seven personnel even as the unit inflicted casualties on the assailants.
The fallen officer has been identified as a Lieutenant, with the six other soldiers comprising the remainder of the fatalities. Their names have not been officially released, and the Nigerian Army had not issued a formal statement as of Wednesday, June 10. The ambush unfolded after troops, operating under the 1 Division Nigerian Army, had completed a mission that disrupted terrorist hideouts and neutralised several armed fighters along the Kaduna-Zaria corridor.
Rigachikun is of major strategic importance to the military. The community is home to critical installations such as the Command Engineering Depot and military residential quarters that are used as an operational hub for conducting counter-terrorism and anti-kidnapping operations across the state. Sources stressed that the attack appears to be a direct retaliation for recent offensives that had significantly degraded the operational capabilities of armed groups in the North-West region, eliminating several bandit leaders and dismantling supply routes.
Reinforcement troops were immediately deployed to the area following the encounter. Security personnel are currently conducting follow-up operations to hunt down the fleeing attackers and prevent further breaches. The incident underscores the continuing threat posed by armed groups, which have shifted their focus from high-traffic corridors like the Kaduna-Zaria Expressway to targeting military patrols directly.
While the authorities have yet to release the identities of the fallen, the ambush has drawn attention to the heavy price paid by frontline troops even as they record tactical victories. Their sacrifice highlights the resilience of terror networks and the ongoing challenge of securing the vast, rugged terrain of the North-West. As the military persists with its coordinated operations across Kaduna and neighbouring states, the burden of holding the line once again falls on the men and women in uniform, who must now patrol the same stretch of road where their comrades fell.
