The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, has officially approved the appointment of Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Dasuki Imam Fulani as the 13th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate. The announcement, which ended over five months of speculation and a rigorous selection process, was made on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, via a statement signed by the Emir’s Personal Assistant, Dr. Abdulraheem Muritala, and confirmed by multiple royal spokespersons including Dr. Abdulazeez Arowona.

The new Chief Imam, a 42-year-old distinguished scholar, emerges from a lineage deeply rooted in the spiritual leadership of Ilorin. He is the biological son of the 10th Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Maliki bn Dasuki Agaka, and a grandson of the 8th Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Ibrahim Dasuki Imam Fulani Agaka. The appointment fills the vacant stool created by the demise of his predecessor, the 12th Chief Imam, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Salihu (popularly known as Bashir Fulani), who passed away on January 19, 2026, at the age of 75, after over 43 years on the religious seat.

Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Dasuki brings a wealth of international and local scholarship to the revered position. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Shari’ah from the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt (2014), and a Diploma in Arabic Islamic Education from the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. Prior to his appointment, he served as the founder and proprietor of Darul Bisharah Arabic and Islamic Studies in Egbejila, Ilorin, and led daily and Jumu’ah prayers at the Afsat Oloriegbe Memorial Mosque in Oko Olowo.

The appointment concludes a rigorous selection exercise conducted by the Emirate’s kingmakers, during which Sheikh Dasuki emerged victorious among several distinguished scholars vying for the prestigious spiritual leadership position. The process was closely watched by the Muslim Ummah in Kwara State, given the immense influence of the Chief Imam’s office in the region.

In his remarks, the Emir prayed for the successful reign of the new Chief Imam, wishing him long life, sound health, and divine wisdom to effectively pilot the affairs of the Muslim Ummah. "Amin. Long live the Ilorin Emirate. Shehu, Shehu, Shehu, wallahu yazimuka mina nas, amin," the Emir declared.
