Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a civilian suspected of impersonating a retired Major General in Kaduna State. The suspect was apprehended by personnel of the 312 Artillery Regiment deployed at the Strike Force Base in the Sabo area of Kaduna, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. The arrest took place on June 11, 2026.

Security sources disclosed that the suspect allegedly impersonated retired Major General A.T. Ibrahim. According to a military source, the arrest followed actionable intelligence that led troops to the suspect at about 9:14 a.m.. The individual was arrested for allegedly impersonating Maj.-Gen. A.T. Ibrahim (rtd) and is currently in military custody undergoing preliminary investigation.

The suspect, identified as a civilian, was allegedly impersonating retired Major General AT Ibrahim at the time of his arrest. Military authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the alleged impersonation or whether the suspect used the false identity to commit any offence. However, security agencies said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether other persons were involved.

The suspect is being held in military custody while preliminary investigations are ongoing. He is expected to be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution after initial military procedures are concluded. The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to combating all forms of criminality, including impersonation and other unlawful acts capable of eroding public confidence in the military institution, and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report individuals falsely claiming military status without proper identification or authorization.

This case follows similar incidents of military impersonation in recent months. In April 2026, a dismissed soldier was arrested for leading an armed robbery syndicate and impersonating military personnel to evade arrest in Kaduna State and its environs. In May 2026, security operatives arrested two men suspected of posing as soldiers in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Additionally, in February 2026, the Nigerian Army arrested a man named Alhaji Tijjani Abdul Rauf, who had reportedly been presenting himself as a retired major general for several years, including during judicial proceedings. Investigations revealed that he had never been enlisted into the Nigerian Army nor obtained any military rank. Impersonating military personnel is a criminal offence in Nigeria under the Armed Forces Act, which explicitly prohibits the unauthorised wearing of military uniforms, ranks, or insignia.
