Armed men suspected to be bandits reportedly attacked farmers working on their fields in Goran Namaye community, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing several people and abducting others.

The incident was said to have occurred on Thursday morning, 12 June 2026, coinciding with Nigeria’s Democracy Day commemorations.

Local accounts from the area indicated that the attackers invaded farmlands where residents were carrying out agricultural activities, opening fire and causing panic among the farmers.

According to preliminary information from community sources, about 17 people were killed, while 11 others sustained injuries during the attack. An unspecified number of farmers were also reportedly abducted by the assailants.

The exact number of those taken away could not be immediately confirmed as of the time of reporting.

Residents said the attackers operated for a short period before escaping, leaving behind casualties and injured victims in the fields. Survivors and locals reportedly assisted in evacuating the wounded to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Security authorities in Zamfara State had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report, and the figures provided remain based on community reports.

The attack adds to ongoing security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where rural communities in Zamfara have continued to experience repeated assaults, kidnappings, and killings attributed to armed groups operating in forested areas.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations continue and security assessments are carried out in the affected community.
