The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme targeting about 3,000 couples across the state, as part of efforts to support marriage and promote social stability among residents. The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, made the disclosure on Monday, June 15, 2026, while briefing journalists on preparations for the exercise.

Daurawa said the fund would cover the full cost of the programme, including furniture, food items, clothing materials, dowries, and other support packages for beneficiaries. According to him, each bride would receive a capital grant of N100,000 as part of an empowerment package designed to support the new families. The government will also give each groom N100,000 to support the payment of marriage dowry.

Medical screening for prospective couples has commenced in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health to ascertain their fitness for marriage. The mandatory medical screening covers hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV, genotype, and other sexually transmitted diseases. Daurawa revealed that more than 5,000 people applied for the programme, but only 3,000 couples would be selected after the screening process.

Meanwhile, conflicting reports suggest the programme may involve 1,500 couples instead of 3,000. Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, also quoted in other reports, stated that 5,000 applied, and a total of 3,000 are to benefit, which translates to 1,500 couples. The Hisbah Board also announced that whoever engages in the mass wedding cannot divorce the wife without the consent of the board.

Daurawa commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for introducing the programme and noted that the governor would announce the official date for the mass wedding ceremony. The initiative is one of the flagship social intervention programmes of the Kano State Government aimed at supporting low-income families and promoting stable marriages in the state.

The mass wedding programme is expected to commence soon, with preparations in top gear.
