The police have arraigned a 27-year-old man, Akinsola Taofeek, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates' Court over allegations of shop breaking and theft. The defendant, whose address was not provided in the charge sheet, is standing trial on a two‑count charge of shop breaking and stealing.

The police prosecutor, ASP Yomi Osuolale, told the court on Thursday, June 18, 2026, that the defendant committed the offences on June 10, 2026, at approximately 5:00 a.m. in Ado‑Ekiti. Osuolale alleged that the defendant entered into the shop and premises of one Oluwatoyin Ilorin, where he stole a pumping machine, a washing machine coil, and an Ox fan coil valued at ₦170,000. The prosecutor stated that the offences contravened Sections 324(2) and 302(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Mr Adeyinka Opaleke and Mr Opeyemi Esan, urged the court to grant the defendant bail with a promise that he would not jump bail. Chief Magistrate Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦50,000 with one surety in like sum. The case has been adjourned until July 23, 2026, for hearing.

The defendant's counsel had pleaded for leniency and assured the court of his client's availability for trial. The prosecution did not oppose the bail application.

The court's decision to grant bail reflects the standard practice of granting bail to defendants who are presumed innocent until proven guilty, while ensuring that they remain available for trial through the surety requirement.
