The South-South Governors Forum has extended a rousing birthday tribute to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, celebrating his leadership and the transformative impact of his M.O.R.E Agenda, even as the region continues to grapple with persistent insecurity, oil theft, and the socio-economic fallout from environmental degradation. The forum, in a statement signed by its Chairman and Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, praised Oborevwori as "an outstanding leader and a dedicated public servant," noting that his transition from the longest-serving Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly to governor testifies to his "unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy and visionary leadership".
The forum's message, issued on Friday, June 19, 2026, acknowledged Oborevwori's achievements in infrastructure, security, and social welfare, stating that through his M.O.R.E Agenda, he continues to "break new grounds in infrastructure development, security of lives and property, social welfare, and in ensuring that Delta becomes more prosperous and united". The governors prayed for God's continued guidance and strength for the Delta governor as he steers the state to even greater heights.
The South-South region has faced a series of security challenges in recent months, including rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, and communal clashes. On June 16, a Southern group urged action on rising insecurity, describing the situation as a "national security emergency" that demands immediate and sustained intervention. The group also called on state governors to secure forests and protect schools, highways, and rural communities. In response, the governors' forum has increasingly prioritised policy coordination and regional security cooperation, with the governors agreeing to strengthen collaboration on security and economic matters.
The South-South Governors Forum's congratulatory message comes amid growing collaboration among governors in the region on issues of mutual interest, including security, economic development, and regional integration. The forum, which is the umbrella body for governors in the South-South geopolitical zone, has in recent months prioritised policy coordination and the promotion of regional interests. The governors also recently commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the South-South Development Commission, a move they described as a significant step towards addressing the region's development challenges.
Despite the security challenges that continue to test the region, the forum's message underscores the importance of leadership continuity and regional solidarity in advancing the collective aspirations of the South-South. The SSGF said it joins the good people of Delta State and well-wishers in celebrating the governor's life, service, and dedication to the growth and unity of Delta and the South-South region.
