A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has sparked outrage after pleading with Nigerians to forgive a woman who was filmed brutally assaulting a 10‑year‑old boy placed in her care. In a statement on Friday, June 19, 2026, Igbokwe said the suspect’s tears moved him deeply and that Nigerians should show mercy because of her child.

The woman, identified as Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere, was arrested after a viral video on Thursday, June 18, showed her allegedly torturing the boy in the Isiowulu area of Obosi, Anambra State. The footage triggered widespread public outrage and prompted intervention by the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs, the First Lady, and the police. Mrs Chukwuyere and her husband, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, were subsequently taken into custody. The police also provided financial support for the boy’s medical treatment.

However, Igbokwe, a vocal Lagos‑based APC figure, struck a different tone. In his statement, he wrote: “Despite the despicable behavior of this woman, I plead for forgiveness because of her Child. She has learnt her lessons in the hardest way. Her cries touched me to the marrow. The boy she maltreated will be fine, and he will be a great man and a wonderful person. Let Nigerians join me to plead for this woman and her daughter. By the way, where is her husband? He should show face at a time like this for his family”.

His plea has drawn sharp reactions, with many Nigerians accusing him of insensitivity and defending child abuse. Critics argued that tears alone do not erase the trauma inflicted on the young boy. The victim has since been placed under protective care, with the Anambra State Government and police vowing to ensure that the child receives adequate support and that the law takes its full course.
