A combined team of security operatives has successfully repelled a bandit attack on Gabtu and Taka Tsaba communities in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, recovering rustled livestock, weapons, and motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing criminals in an operation that dealt a significant blow to the criminal network terrorising the region. The operation, which took place on Friday, June 19, 2026, was carried out by joint security forces in response to intelligence reports that armed bandits had infiltrated the two communities to carry out attacks and rustle livestock.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the security team engaged the heavily armed bandits in a fierce gun duel during the tactical operation. The operatives, acting on credible intelligence, forced the criminals to abandon their mission and flee deep into the forest with suspected gunshot wounds. The police said the security team acted on credible intelligence about the movement of armed bandits in the area and launched a coordinated operation that included ground forces and tactical units. The bandits, who had reportedly entered Gabtu and Taka Tsaba communities on Friday afternoon, were met with overwhelming resistance from the joint security forces. During the fierce exchange of gunfire, several of the attackers were neutralised, while others abandoned their motorcycles and the bodies of their fallen associates and fled into the surrounding bush.
Security forces recovered a significant number of rustled animals during the operation, including 329 cattle and 175 sheep, according to multiple reports. The police also recovered one AK‑47 rifle and 15 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition from the bandits. The Command described the recovery as a significant breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against banditry, cattle rustling, and other violent crimes across the state. Troops also conducted follow‑up clearance operations in surrounding forested areas, leading to additional arrests. The recovered livestock has since been handed over to the Committee on Recovery of Rustled Animals in Gusau for identification and return to their owners.
The Zamfara State Police Command reiterated its determination to put an end to banditry in the state and assured residents that security operations would continue until normalcy was fully restored. The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations. The successful operation in Gummi LGA follows a pattern of intensified military and police operations across Zamfara State, where armed groups have continued to terrorise rural communities despite repeated government efforts. The Nigerian military, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has sustained offensive operations across the North‑West, targeting terrorist and bandit enclaves in an effort to restore peace and security to the troubled region.
The Command commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives involved in the operation and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information. The latest victory has brought a measure of relief to the people of Gabtu and Taka Tsaba, who have endured repeated attacks and abductions in recent months. For the troops who stood their ground and forced the bandits to retreat, the operation is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence‑led operations and the unwavering commitment of security forces to protecting lives and property across Zamfara State.
