Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded fresh operational successes after repelling terrorist attacks, rescuing abducted victims and recovering weapons and other items during coordinated operations in Sokoto and Katsina States.
The operations were carried out on Sunday, June 21, and Monday, June 22, 2026, across parts of Sokoto and Katsina States by troops of the Joint Task Force North West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, as part of ongoing military efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and criminal activities in the North-West region of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 22, 2026, the Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, said troops successfully disrupted an attempt by armed terrorists to infiltrate Tureta town in Sokoto State after receiving credible intelligence about the planned attack.
According to the military spokesperson, the troops responded swiftly by engaging the suspected terrorists, forcing them to abandon their mission and retreat from the area.
Danja explained that the fleeing criminals were later tracked through aerial surveillance to Sulubawa Gidan Kare village, where they were reportedly moving with abducted civilians and rustled livestock.
He said the troops immediately launched a pursuit operation to rescue the victims and recover the stolen animals, despite encountering an ambush organised by the fleeing terrorists.
The military spokesperson stated that the troops demonstrated professionalism and determination during the encounter, using superior firepower to overcome the attack and force the criminals to scatter.
The operation resulted in the successful rescue of the abducted civilians, recovery of rustled cattle and seizure of two motorcycles allegedly used by the terrorists during their activities.
In a separate operation conducted in the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, troops carried out an intelligence-led raid on a suspected terrorist hideout in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
During the raid, the military said the troops overpowered the criminals during an exchange of fire, neutralising two suspected terrorists while others escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
The operation also led to the recovery of military-grade equipment and items linked to the activities of the criminal group.
Recovered items included a PKT assault rifle, an AK-47 rifle with ammunition, three motorcycles, communication devices, rustled livestock and other materials believed to have been used by the terrorists.
The latest operations highlight the continued security challenges facing communities across the North-West, where armed criminal groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and livestock theft.
Security forces have intensified operations in affected areas in recent months, focusing on intelligence gathering, targeted raids and coordinated responses against terrorist and bandit networks.
Lieutenant Colonel Danja said the achievements demonstrate the commitment of troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to sustain pressure on criminal elements operating in the region.
He assured residents that military operations would continue with the aim of dismantling terrorist networks, reducing criminal activities and restoring peace and stability across affected communities.
The Nigerian military has continued to call for public cooperation through the provision of credible information that can assist security agencies in identifying criminal hideouts and preventing attacks.
The successful operations in Sokoto and Katsina come as part of broader efforts by security agencies to protect citizens, rescue victims of abduction and strengthen security across the North-West region.
