A 33-year-old woman, Taiwo Oluwaseun, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N25.1 million by false pretences and stealing from her employer, a packaging company in Ojota, Lagos. The defendant appeared before Magistrate Lateef A. Owolabi on Monday, June 22, 2026, to face a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, fraudulent conversion, and obtaining by false pretences.
The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant and others still at large committed the offences in July 2025 at Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Limited, located on Oluorunfunmi Street, Ojota, within the Ikeja Magisterial District. According to the charge sheet, the defendant allegedly conspired with others to defraud the company of N25,087,125, while also fraudulently transferring N120,000 belonging to the company to her personal account. The total sum involved in the fraud charges is N25,207,125, according to court documents.
The specific counts of the charge include conspiracy to commit felony, stealing, and fraudulent conversion of the company's property. Count IV of the charge alleges that the defendant and others at large defrauded Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Limited of N25,087,125 through deceit, an offence punishable under Section 325 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The offences are said to contravene Sections 280, 286, 325 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Ms Oluwaseun pleaded not guilty to all charges. Following her plea, Magistrate Owolabi granted her bail in the sum of N1.5 million with two sureties in like sum. The magistrate ordered the sureties to provide evidence of tax payment and undergo address verification. The defendant was remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions. The case has been adjourned to Monday, June 30, 2026, for further hearing.
Legal experts note that under Nigerian law, an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction, as guaranteed by Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution. The Investigating Police Officer listed on the charge sheet is Inspector Etim Patience from Area ‘F’ Command, Ikeja.
