The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in Saturday's local government elections in Gombe State, winning all 24 chairmanship seats and 240 councillorship positions across the state. The Chairman of the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC), Abdullahi Garba, who announced the results on Saturday, June 27, 2026, declared the ruling party the winner in all the local government councils and wards.
Garba described the election as a major milestone following the expansion of the electoral process from 11 local government areas to 24 administrative councils. According to him, the expansion became possible after Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya approved the creation of 13 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to bring governance closer to the people. “The last cycle of elections in 2023 was conducted in 11 local governments. But His Excellency created an additional 13 Local Council Development Areas to bring development closer to the people,” Garba said. He noted that the commission visited other states, including Lagos, where elections had already been conducted using LCDAs, and after studying their experiences, they secured the necessary enabling law through the House of Assembly. The expansion increased the number of chairmanship positions from 11 to 24 and the number of councillorship seats from 114 to 240.
While several political parties participated in the election, only the APC fielded candidates across all the newly created councils. “APC contested the full cycle in all 24 local governments. African Action Congress (AAC) fielded candidates in only three local governments, while the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) contested in six. Youth Party contested in three local governments, and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and National Rescue Movement (NRM) contested in three each,” Garba disclosed. He added that this explained why some parties recorded zero votes in several areas because they did not participate across all the councils and wards.
The election was largely peaceful, with voters turning out in large numbers, as security personnel, election officials and observers monitored the exercise. However, the landslide victory of the ruling party came amid the absence of major opposition parties in the state, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Democratic Congress (ADC), from the polls. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, after casting his vote at Yahaya Umaru Polling Unit 010 in Jekadafari Ward, Gombe, described the exercise as peaceful, free and fair. He expressed satisfaction with the large voter turnout, saying it reflected public confidence in the democratic process and his administration's commitment to strengthening grassroots governance.
Garba thanked political parties, election observers, civil society organisations, security agencies, the media, and other stakeholders for contributing to a peaceful electoral process. The outcome gives the APC full control of the local government administration in Gombe State, with its candidates expected to assume office across the 24 councils.
