A devastating road accident in Agaie Local Government Area has claimed five lives and left eight others with critical injuries, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The crash occurred on Sunday, June 28, 2026, and involved a trailer and a tanker.
Mr Hussaini Guregi, the NEMA Desk Officer for Agaie LGA, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Sunday. He stated that the trailer, which was carrying about 40 passengers, was travelling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Shagamu in Ogun State when the collision occurred.
According to Guregi, the accident was caused by a faulty tanker that was stationed on the road. As the trailer attempted to overtake the stationary vehicle, it lost control and crashed. Five people died at the scene, while the injured were rushed to the General Hospital in Agaie for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital's morgue.
This tragic incident highlights the persistent dangers on Nigerian roads, which have been the site of numerous fatal accidents in recent months. In February 2026, five travellers were killed in another crash on the Lapai–Agaie Road in Niger State. Additionally, a fuel tanker explosion along the Agaie-Bida Road on June 18, 2026, claimed 30 lives. Just weeks earlier, on June 3, over 30 people lost their lives in a tanker explosion in the Essan and Badeggi communities along the Bida-Agaie road.
A recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that road crashes in Nigeria increased by 19.19 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, with a total of 3,034 crashes recorded. The NBS data also showed that the country recorded 5,474 road accident victims in the same quarter, including 1,383 fatalities. The Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have frequently advised motorists to avoid night travel, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
The recurring tragedies on the Agaie-Bida and Lapai-Agaie roads have led to repeated calls for the immediate reconstruction of these federal highways. As the community mourns, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further loss of lives.
