Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) successfully repelled a midnight attack by suspected bandits on the Jebbu Miango community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, but the assault claimed the life of a 74-year-old resident before the assailants were driven away.

The attack occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026, when suspected armed militias invaded the community and opened sporadic gunfire, sending residents fleeing for safety. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, military sources confirmed that troops attached to Sector 3 of Operation Enduring Peace swiftly responded to distress calls and mobilised to the affected community, where they engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

The troops successfully overpowered the assailants, forcing them to abandon the attack and retreat into the surrounding highlands. However, after the gunmen fled, soldiers conducting a search of the community discovered the body of a 74-year-old resident, identified as Mr. Baba Den, who was believed to have been killed during the attack.

Following the incident, troops launched offensive operations and domination patrols across the area to prevent the fleeing attackers from regrouping or carrying out further attacks. Military authorities confirmed that the security situation in the community had been brought under control, while efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects. Residents were urged to remain calm and continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies to support ongoing operations aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area.

The latest attack adds to the persistent insecurity in Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly come under assault by armed groups despite ongoing military operations across the state.
