China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its long-standing partnership with Nigeria, pledging deeper cooperation in governance, economic development and strategic engagement as the Communist Party of China (CPC) celebrates its 105th anniversary. In a statement marking the anniversary, issued on Tuesday in Abuja, China's Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said the CPC's leadership had been the driving force behind China's transformation into the world's second-largest economy and a major engine of global growth.

July 1, 2026 marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. Ambassador Yu published a signed article titled “The CPC at 105: Staying True to Its Founding Mission, Opening a New Chapter in China-Nigeria Friendship” in Nigerian media including People's Daily, Daybreak, and Leadership, to celebrate the occasion. In the article, he reflected on China's remarkable journey over the past century and outlined the principles that have underpinned the country's progress: independence and self-reliance, a people-centred development philosophy, continuous self-reform, and theoretical innovation.

The ambassador noted that China had eradicated absolute poverty, lifting more than 700 million rural residents out of poverty, and had established the world's largest education system and social security system, with basic medical insurance covering more than 1.3 billion people. He said the CPC had remained committed to seeking happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation, and that China's modernisation path offered an alternative to Western models, providing practical, replicable experience for developing countries seeking independent paths to development.

Turning to bilateral relations, Ambassador Yu noted that 2026 marks 55 years of diplomatic ties between China and Nigeria, a relationship established in 1971. “For 55 years, China and Nigeria have stood together through thick and thin as good friends and trusted partners,” he said. The envoy emphasised that China will continue to support Nigeria in pursuing a modernisation path tailored to its unique national realities. Moving forward, Beijing plans to utilise institutional frameworks like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to facilitate closer governance exchanges. A key priority for the immediate future includes aligning China's newly launched 15th Five-Year Plan with Nigeria's “Renewed Hope Agenda” to drive mutual economic benefits, expand practical cooperation, and advance the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“No matter how the international landscape evolves, the CPC and the Chinese Government have remained unwavering in their commitment to long-term friendship with Nigeria, steadfast in supporting Nigeria in pursuing a modernisation path suited to its own national conditions, and resolute in promoting practical cooperation that improves the well-being of the Nigerian people,” Ambassador Yu stated. The ambassador's remarks come as both countries prepare to hold a high-level political consultation meeting in July 2026 aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation in key sectors including industrialisation, power generation, and railway modernisation. The Federal Government has also commended the positive impact of China's zero-tariff policy for eligible Nigerian exports, which came into effect on May 1, 2026, and has already contributed to increased Nigerian exports to the Chinese market.
