Suspected bandits attacked Dauran town in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Thursday night, abducting multiple residents and torching the home of a prominent community elder in the latest wave of violence to hit the troubled North-West region.
The attackers stormed the town under the cover of darkness, setting fire to the residence of Malam Ahmad Ariri Galadawa, a well-respected elder in the community. Security analyst Bakatsine shared details of the raid on X on Friday, confirming that bandits razed the elder's house and kidnapped several inhabitants during the assault.
The exact number of people taken away remains unclear, but the attack has left families desperately searching for missing loved ones. Bakatsine described the incident as another episode of violence that leaves communities counting the cost of insecurity. "Another night of violence leaves families searching for loved ones and communities once again counting the cost of insecurity," he wrote.
No official statement has yet been issued by Zamfara State authorities on the incident. Zurmi has endured repeated attacks from armed groups in recent months, with the latest raid adding to mounting security concerns across the state, where banditry continues to disrupt daily life. The attack on Dauran town follows a pattern of violence that has plagued Zurmi Local Government Area, with residents frequently falling victim to kidnapping, killings, and displacement.
The burning of a community elder's home is particularly symbolic, reflecting the bandits' intent to instill fear and undermine traditional authority structures that have long served as pillars of community resilience in rural Zamfara. As families search for their missing relatives and communities count their losses, the attack serves as yet another grim reminder of the security crisis that has turned the North-West into one of Nigeria's most volatile regions.
