The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained an unspecified number of its officers over the alleged brutal assault of a civilian in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area, launching a full-scale investigation into the incident that has sparked public outrage after images of the victim surfaced on social media. The Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, noting that the officers involved had been identified, transferred to the Command Headquarters, and placed in detention pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation.
According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026, and involved personnel attached to the Ohaukwu Police Division. The victim, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, reportedly sustained serious injuries during the altercation and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA). The case gained widespread attention after a social media user, @martins_nwede, posted images of the injured civilian on X (formerly Twitter), with a caption accusing Officer Kingsley Esheya of the assault. "Officer Kingsley Esheya attached to Ohaukwu Division, Ebonyi State Command did this to unsuspecting citizen. The officer must not go unpunished," the post read, further alleging that the Commissioner of Police was aware of the incident but that the accused was attempting to cover up the matter with lies.
In response to the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, ordered immediate action upon receiving the report of the incident. According to the statement issued by SP Ukandu, the Commissioner directed that the officers involved be transferred to the Command Headquarters and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation. "The officers have been detained pending the outcome of the investigation and will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in line with the findings," Ukandu stated. The police spokesperson reiterated the Command's commitment to professionalism and accountability, stressing its zero-tolerance policy against brutality and all forms of misconduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.
