A Magistrate Court sitting in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, has granted bail to a 30-year-old suspected fake lawyer, Collins Ehibor, who was arraigned on charges of impersonation and fraudulently obtaining by false pretense. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Gregory Epete, admitted Ehibor to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties after he pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The suspect was arrested and charged before the Magistrate Court on July 6, 2026, with Charge No. ME/89C/2026. He faces a two-count charge bordering on impersonation, which is punishable under Section 484 of the Criminal Code, and fraudulently obtaining by false pretense, which is punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code.
Following his not-guilty plea, the court granted him bail with two sureties. The courtroom was reportedly filled with members of the Effurun Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other concerned individuals who came to witness the proceedings. The case has been adjourned to July 14, 2026, for further hearing.
The arrest and arraignment of Ehibor highlight the ongoing efforts by legal authorities and the NBA to curb the activities of individuals who falsely present themselves as legal practitioners, a practice that undermines the integrity of the legal profession and poses a risk to unsuspecting members of the public seeking legal representation.
