Driver Tracked to Abuja, Arrested After Abandoning Employer at Church and Stealing Her Car

The Ondo State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained efforts to combat crime and protect the lives and property of residents with the arrest of a suspected vehicle thief and the successful recovery of a stolen vehicle in the Federal Capital Territory. The incident, which has drawn attention to the vulnerability of employers to trusted aides, was reported on 5 July 2026, by one Mrs. Remilekun of Oba-Ile, Akure, who informed the Police that she had employed one Adesola Ogunrotifa, a 40-year-old man, as her personal driver in July 2025.

According to her report, on Sunday, 5 July 2026, the suspect drove her to the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Isegun, Akure, for a church service. However, after dropping her off at the church premises, he abandoned her and unlawfully drove away with her Hyundai saloon car purportedly heading towards Abuja. Following the report, the Command immediately launched a comprehensive investigation. Acting on credible intelligence and deploying strategic investigative techniques, a team of detectives from B-division Akure painstakingly tracked the suspect to Abuja, where he was successfully apprehended. The stolen Hyundai saloon vehicle was also recovered intact.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed the arrest and recovery, reiterating the command's commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that criminal suspects are brought to justice. He commended the investigating team for what he described as a swift, intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the vehicle. The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu, described the operation as a testament to the command's professionalism and intelligence-driven policing, noting that it led to the prompt recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of the suspect. He reaffirmed the command's resolve to deny criminals safe haven within and outside Ondo State, while urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The suspect has since been charged to court for prosecution in accordance with the law. The Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring that criminal elements have no safe haven within or outside Ondo State.
