A night of national celebration in France turned into a scene of grief when a 17-year-old girl fell from a truck and died while celebrating the national team's World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 10 July 2026, at Aulnoye-Aymeries, a village near the northern city of Maubeuge, close to the Belgian border.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time, when the teenager climbed onto the back of a truck as jubilant crowds took to the streets to celebrate France's 2-0 win in Boston. According to emergency services, the girl fell from the vehicle and was run over by the same truck. The truck, which was not pulling a trailer, was reportedly carrying several people as part of a parade when the accident occurred. The vehicle was entering a roundabout at the time of the fall, and the teenager was crushed beneath it.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save her. They attempted resuscitation, but she was pronounced dead on site. Six minors were present when the accident happened, and one of them, who was in a state of shock, was taken to the Maubeuge hospital.

The driver of the truck has been detained by police, and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to local reports, the driver had allowed several people, including the victim, to climb onto the back of the vehicle.

The death cast a shadow over what had been a night of widespread celebration across France. Hundreds of people danced in the streets of Paris, watched by thousands of police officers on security duty. Despite the deployment of more than 20,000 police officers in the capital, the night passed without major incidents, with only 10 arrests reported.

In London, however, celebrations took a different turn. Police reported that four people were arrested following "violent disorder" on Edgware Road, near Hyde Park, where some revelers threw bottles and other objects at officers. One officer was injured during the unrest.

France's 2-0 victory over Morocco secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The team is now set to face the winner of the Spain-Belgium quarter-final in Dallas on Tuesday.
